Clinical Singificance of Mammography in the Detection of Breast Disease

Abstract
To evaluate the clinical significance of mammography in the detection of the breast diseases, especially breast carcinoma, we analyzed 1,336 cases of mammography retrospectively.
The mammographies were done in Seoul Adventist Hospital, during 24 months from January 1994 to December 1995. According to the mammographic findings, we divided the subjects into three groups; normal group, abnormal group in need of follow up
study, and
abnormal group requiring biopsy.
The age range was from 16 years to 73 years, mean 38.2 years, and the largest age group was 4th decade(44.0%). On mammography, the normal group consisted of 1,140 cases (85.4%), and the abnormal group consisted of 196 cases(14.6%). The abnormal
findings
were benign-looking calcification(n=66), fibroadenoma(n=58), fibrocystic change(n=52), malignant lesion(n=12), accessary breast(n=2), and others. In eight of 12 cases, which were suspected to be malignant on mammograms, breast carcinomas were
confirmed
pathologically. In eight cases of breast carcinoma, four were under 40 years of age and the other 4 were over 40. The mammographic findings of breast cancer were spiculated margin(n=3), clusted microcalcification(n=4) and enlarged axillary
node(n=1).
The frequency of breast cancer was 6.0/1,000 of all cases.
The mammography is helpful for early detection of breast cancer.
